Detroit officer critical after shooting; suspect killed

DETROIT (AP) - A man who critically wounded a Detroit police officer responding to a domestic dispute was caught on video surveillance chambering a round into a handgun as officers knocked on the door to his apartment building, the city's police chief said Monday.

Cameras inside the west side building also recorded the man going down some stairs and extending the .380-caliber pistol as he opened the exterior door where the officers stood on the other side, James Craig told reporters.

One of the officers, described as a 14-year Detroit police veteran, exchanged shots Sunday night with the man, later identified as James Edward Ray, 46.

"Simultaneously, both the officer and the suspect fell to the ground," Craig said.

The second officer also fired shots at Ray before dragging his partner away.

The first officer was shot in the forehead and was listed in critical condition Monday at a hospital. His name has not been released.

Ray was pronounced dead at the scene. He had no connection with the assault and battery report that the officers were planning to investigate when they arrived at the apartment building, according to Craig.

Both officers were in uniform and arrived in a marked police vehicle.

"We believe he was prepared to shoot anyone who was at the front door," Craig said of Ray. "This is a sobering reminder of the dangers our officers face each and every day."

Investigators later found a .45-caliber handgun and a shotgun in Ray's apartment.

A man believed to be involved in the domestic dispute had already left the building before the officers arrived.
