Vegan meal plan service Daily Harvest is recalling its plant-based French Lentil + Leak Crumbles and urging customers who received it to throw it out after several people reported suffering gastrointestinal issues after eating it.

Customers have taken to social media to report acute stomach pain, with some claiming their livers and gall bladders were damaged as a result of consuming the dish.

"We launched an investigation to identify the root cause of the health issues being reported. We're working closely with the FDA and with multiple independent labs to investigate this," the company said in a recall notice updated Wednesday, noting it was consulting with microbiologists and allergists as well as experts on toxins and pathogens. However, it said its tests have all come back negative so far.

"We are doing everything we can, as quickly as we can to identify the root cause," Daily Harvest added.

Crumbles are a meat substitute that is usually heated and browned in a skillet. And while they are not meat, the company's website still advises cooking them to an internal temperature of 165℉, the same as chicken.

The recall is not listed on the Food and Drug Administration's recall website, presumably because the product is sold direct to customers instead of through grocery stores. However, last year, the FDA proposed regulating meal plan services. Areas of concern include identifying the source of their ingredients and refrigerated packaging for items like meat.

Daily Harvest is offering a $10 credit to customers who purchased the dish. Those who wish to claim it can file reports via the website or email.

Founded in 2015, New York-based Daily Harvest makes frozen fruit- and plant-based meals and smoothies that are delivered to customers' homes, where they only have to heat or blend them before eating.
