EVANSVILLE - An Evansville man has been arrested and charged with murder after police say an 18-month-old boy died in his care Tuesday morning.

Evansville Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Taylor Merriss identified the man as 21-year-old Tavion D. Cobb. On Wednesday, Cobb was preliminarily charged with murder, a Level 1 felony, two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, also Level 1 felonies, and failure to appear for a warrant, a Level 6 felony.

The child hasn't been publicly identified.

According to an EPD news release, a mother brought her unresponsive 18-month-old son to a local hospital Tuesday morning, triggering a police investigation. Doctors attempted life-saving measures, but the child was pronounced dead at the hospital, Merriss said.

During the subsequent investigation, the mother reportedly told police she had arranged for Cobb to watch her son on Monday - something "he commonly does," the release states. But the following morning, Cobb reportedly told her an "incident" had injured the 18-month-old boy. The release didn't provide any further details.

Police said Cobb returned the child to his mother shortly after this conversation, but by that point, the boy was already unresponsive.

EPD determined the boy "suffered severe physical injuries while in the guardianship of Cobb, causing his death," Merriss wrote in the news release. "An autopsy is scheduled through the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office."

Cobb was booked into the Vanderburgh County jail Wednesday afternoon. A warrant for Cobb's arrest has been active since May, according to court records, after he was charged with one misdemeanor count of theft in February.
