GROVELAND - Police are investigating a fatal shooting Thursday afternoon that occurred outside a day care facility in Groveland.

Groveland Police rushed to the We Are The Future childcare center at 207 Groveland Farms Road near State Road 50 at 4:20 p.m.

A press release said two men were in a "physical altercation which subsequently led to a shooting."

One died, and the other man was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, the release said.

"He complained of chest pains," said Sarah Panko, the department's public information manager.

The department is not releasing his name because he has not been arrested and the incident is still under investigation. "He is cooperating with us," Panko told the Daily Commercial.

The man who died of a single gunshot wound has been identified as Stephan Jefferson. He was flown by Air Care to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he later died.

It is not clear from reports if the two men were at the day care to pick up a child, or if any children witnessed the shooting.

"This was an isolated incident with no immediate threat to the community," the release said.

"This continues to be an active investigation by the detectives of the Groveland Police Department, and we are working closely with the Office of the State Attorney."
