MUNCIE, Ind. - A handgun was found in a student's locker at Central High School on Monday morning.

About 10 a.m., school officials found the firearm, in a backpack, while searching the locker, according to a release from Andy Klotz, Muncie Community Schools chief communications officer.

The student was "immediately detained" by school security officers and Muncie police were called to the school, Klotz said.

The student was taken into custody and a "full investigation" by city police is being conducted.

A "soft lockdown," prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving the high school, lasted about an hour before school officials and police determined there was "no other safety concern," according to the MCS release.

"We applaud the proactive actions of our school security officers, the school administration team and the immediate response from the Muncie Police Department," Klotz said.

Muncie Police Chief Nate Sloan said he could not comment further on "an active investigation involving a juvenile."
