A man who claimed self-defense following a fatal shooting in White Plains last year pleaded guilty Monday not to a homicide charge but to tampering with physical evidence.

Shakar Lerke had been charged with first-degree manslaughter in the June 17, 2021, death of Wilson Maurice Miller. But prosecutors in the Westchester District Attorney's Office agreed to let him plead to the lower charge.

The guilty plea related to Lerke's hiding his shirt, which had Miller's blood on it, under the hood of a car following the shooting.

Lerke, 26, had faced a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 25 years on the manslaughter charge. The tampering charge is a felony punishable by up to four years. Westchester County Judge George Fufidio promised Lerke a term of 1 1/2 to 3 years.

The shooting outside 33 Fisher Court resulted from an ongoing dispute between the two men, police said at the time.

Miller, 30, grew up in White Plains and lived in Elmsford. He was working for a travel agency.

Police commended residents of the Winbrook housing complex for alerting them to Lerke's involvement. One caller told police about four hours after the shooting that Lerke was on East Post Road and he was taken into custody there a short time later.

Immediately following the arrest, White Plains police said Lerke would be charged not only with manslaughter but also with second-degree murder and The Journal News/lohud reported that at the time.

But a spokeswoman for the Westchester District Attorney's Office said Monday that the murder charge was never filed.
