GOSHEN - A Newburgh man was sentenced Friday to 15 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to the attempted murder of two people last year.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced the sentence for Danny Flores-Garcia, 20, of Newburgh. In addition to the two counts of attempted second-degree murder, Flores-Garcia also pleaded guilty to one count each of second-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Flores-Garcia pleaded guilty to those charges in March. All the charges are felonies.

Hoovler said that in pleading guilty, Flores-Garcia admitted that he shot three people on Mill Street in the city of Newburgh around 2:40 a.m. on Sept. 17, 2021. Flores-Garcia admitted that he was trying to kill two of those people, and that he caused serious physical injury to the third person.

Flores-Garcia also admitted that he had possessed a loaded and defaced Ruger pistol around 11:15 a.m. on July 13, 2021 on Benkard Avenue, also in the city of Newburgh.

"This defendant's conduct was incredibly violent and dangerous, and he deserves the sentence that was imposed," Hoovler said in a statement. "While thankfully no one was killed by this defendant's criminal actions, the lives of his victims were forever altered."

Matthew Witherow, Flores-Garcia's attorney, could not immediately be reached for comment.
