Phoenix police have made an arrest in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a Phoenix resident.

Sgt. Phil Krynsky, a Phoenix police spokesperson, said in a written statement that officers arrested 45-year-old John Cole, the suspect in the kidnapping, murder and dismemberment of 28-year-old Antoine Smith.

Phoenix police responded to a missing persons call on Sept. 19 where officers learned that Smith had been kidnapped from his apartment between the evening of Sept. 16 and the morning of Sept. 17, Krynsky said.

The motive for Smith's kidnapping is believed to have been related to a debt he owed.

An investigation into the incident led police to find Cole's vehicle on the way to California where officers, assisted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, stopped and took Cole into custody.

Police got a search warrant for Cole's vehicle and found human remains inside, Sgt. Krynsky said.

Detectives interviewed Cole where he led them to a rural area just south of Tucson where more of Smith's remains were found. Cole claimed that the murder of Smith was an act of self-defense, police said.

Cole was booked into Maricopa County Jail on multiple felonies, including first-degree murder.
