Police identify South Bend man as victim in northwest-side homicide

SOUTH BEND - A South Bend man has been identified as the victim in a Thursday night shooting on the city's northwest side.

Police say Johnnie Lee Johnson, 53, of South Bend was pronounced dead shortly after officers and medics responded to the scene of the shooting in the 1200 block of Huey Street.

The Tribune previously reported that police were dispatched to the area at 8:20 p.m. Thursday in response to a ShotSpotter alert. Scanner traffic indicated the officers found a man shot in the chest when they arrived at the scene.

South Bend's Violent Crimes unit is investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Family have been notified and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, police officials said Friday afternoon.

Investigators ask those with information about the shooting to call Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP to submit an anonymous tip.
