The Portage County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page Monday that it received numerous calls and reports regarding a text message scam involving threats over the previous 24 hours.
This scam consists of a text message stating that the sender is from a very dangerous cartel and someone has paid them to kill the intended victim and/or the victim's family. They then proceed with threatening statements that the victim must pay them $6,000 to prevent this from happening.
"Please know that this is a fraudulent operation," the sheriff's post says.
The sheriff's office urges people to not provide personal information or money to anyone they do not trust. Anyone who is a victim of a scam should contact their local police department.
