A Salisbury man was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison for a 2020 home invasion, the Wicomico County State's Attorney announced.

On Jan. 13, Wislet Gerard was sentenced to 25 years in prison for home invasion, the maximum sentence, by Karen M. Dean, Associate Judge of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County.

On Oct. 14, 2020, Gerard broke into the home of a 65-year old woman with the intent to commit a sexual offense, the state's attorney's office said in a release.

The victim was awakened by his presence, and Gerard stated "I want to have sex with you." A struggle ensued, and the victim was able to fend Gerard off, causing him to leave the residence.

Gerard had previously entered a guilty plea for home invasion on Nov. 17, 2022, and sentencing was deferred pending completion of a pre-sentence investigation. Because home invasion is a crime of violence, Gerard will not be eligible for parole until he serves half of his sentence, the release said.

"This was a crime perpetrated against one of our most vulnerable citizens. Our homes are supposed to be our sanctuary, and this Defendant violated the sanctity of this victim's home with the vilest of intents," Wicomico County State's Attorney Jamie L. Dykes said. "The strength exhibited by the victim in protecting herself throughout this perilous ordeal is incredible, and the resolute sentence imposed by Judge Dean will ensure that this defendant will not soon be free to harm another."
