The Philadelphia 76ers were able to pick up another win on their five-game road trip as they knocked off the Portland Trail Blazers 105-95 on Thursday. The Sixers are now 4-0 on this West Coast trip as they have found a way to come out on top in different ways.
Against the Blazers, it was with their defensive effort. Philadelphia held Portland to 37.6% shooting and 9-for-37 from deep. They also held Blazers star Damian Lillard to a miserable 6-for-21 shooting and he was 3-for-13 from deep while committing six turnovers.
The defensive combination of De'Anthony Melton and Matisse Thybulle did a terrific job of harassing Lillard into tough shots and Philadelphia was able to come out on top.
"Defense was great," coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "Just swarming. Did a great job with trapping. Dame is Dame, right? And I thought Matisse and D-Melt were phenomenal. They really were."
Lillard entered the night averaging 29.3 points on the season. He did end up with 25 points on Thursday, but he had an overall miserable night shooting the ball as Philadelphia was able to put the clamps on the Portland star.
"I think De'Anthony and Matisse did a really good job on him," Tyrese Maxey told NBC Sports Philadelphia in a sideline interview. "De'Anthony was flying around making it tough for him. I think he got going late, but De'Anthony did a really good job. So we did, collectively on him, we did a really good job and shout out to the coaches for the game plan."
Rivers added that Lillard only got going late due to the bigs not being able to be up on the screens all the time.
"We asked a lot of our bigs tonight (Thursday) to be up the whole game," Rivers added. "That's tough and a few times we were not, he made us pay. So they had a lot to do with it as well. Then I thought we had deflections. Got our hands on a lot of balls tonight as well."
The Sixers were terrific on the defensive end on Thursday and they will be looking to carry it into their matchup with the Sacramento Kings on Saturday to end the trip.
