SOMERVILLE - A South Bound Brook woman is facing a mandatory life sentence in prison if she is found guilty of murdering her 4-year-old son.

Elina Gutti, 39, who is also known as Olga Singhania and Olga Gutiy, has been charged in a fresh indictment under a new state law that increases the penalty of murdering a person under the age of 14.

Gutti pleaded not guilty on Friday to the charge before Superior Court Judge Julie Marino in a video conference from the Somerset County Jail.

Gutti has been charged with slashing the throat of her son, Aiden Singhania, on Feb. 6, 2021, at the Cedar Street home they shared.

At 2:28 a.m. that day, South Bound Brook police received a 911 call from Gutti reporting she had unexplained injuries to her wrist.

When police arrived, they located Gutti with injuries to her left wrist that required medical treatment. Police found her 4-year-old son in the first-floor bedroom of the home with severe lacerations to his throat and two bloody kitchen knives on the floor near the bed, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.

Matthew Katzenbach, the public defender representing Gutti, told the judge that the first psychiatric expert he hired to examine his client has died.

Katzenbach said he is in the process of obtaining approval from the Office of Public Defender to hire another expert.

"We need to get moving on this," said Robert Hawkes, the prosecutor in the case.

Hawkes said the prosecutor's office has already retained an expert to review the defense expert's report once it is completed and then interview Gutti.

Katzenbach said he would contest the superseding indictment.

Gutti's next court appearance is scheduled for May 17. Marino said she expects Katzenbach then to report on the status of retaining an expert and making an appointment to examine Gutti.
