Springfield police say officers fatally shot an armed man Wednesday afternoon at Tom Watkins Park.
Police say they were called to the park on High Street in northwest Springfield at about 1:45 p.m. to check the well-being of a suicidal man.
When officers arrived, police say the man pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. When the man did not comply with officers telling him to drop the gun, officers fired several shots at the man, killing him, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department.
The deceased was identified as Justin M. Barker, 33, from Springfield.
The news release says the four officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. The results of a concurrent criminal investigation will be presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office for determination of whether charges should be filed.
Several patrol vehicles responded to the scene on Wednesday afternoon, and police taped off a large section of the middle of the park as they began their investigation.
