STAUNTON - Court records show that a Staunton man involved in a fatal crash over the weekend in Augusta County was charged Monday with manslaughter.

Authorities arrested Walker W. Rexrode, 19, of Staunton, charging him with driving while intoxicated (first offense), driving on a suspended or revoked license, and involuntary manslaughter.

According to Virginia State Police, at 2:02 a.m. on Saturday, a 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Rexrode was headed south on Hildebrand Circle in Augusta County outside of Staunton. Rexrode reportedly lost control of the vehicle, ran it off the right side of the road, overcorrected, then ran it off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Police said the vehicle overturned.

A passenger in the Ford, David I. Young, 19, of Staunton, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Rexrode, who was partially ejected, suffered serious injuries and was briefly hospitalized. Following the crash, police indicated alcohol might have played a role.

Rexrode's 19th birthday was Sunday, one day after the fatality.

He is being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond. His first court appearance is set for June 9, according to court records.
