Suspect arrested in Monroe gas station shooting, faces second degree murder charge

A Monroe man was arrested for the early Tuesday morning deadly shooting of a Black male.

Jarvis Lavelle Johnson, 31 of Monroe was booked into Ouachita Correctional Center and charged with criminal conspiracy, second degree murder, illegal carrying of weapons and two counts of attempted second murder.

According to authorities, officers were dispatched to NowSave on Winnsboro Road in reference to a shooting. Three total people were found by officers to have been shot, with one being pronounced dead at the scene

Surveillance footage shows an individual exiting the store following a verbal altercation with the victim. The individual went to get his brother, Johnson, from their vehicle in front of the store. In the video, Johnson appeared to walk to the front of the store and swing at the victim.

The victim then produced a black handgun from his front right pocket, but is never seen pointing it at the anyone. Johnson then produced a black handgun from his front right pocket and fires shots at the victim. He then walks in front of the door and points into the business from the front door.

The victim has since holstered his weapon, but pulls it back out as he sees Johnson coming back into view. Johnson then fires through the door of the business, and the victim returns fire. The victim was struck once in the right side of his chest. Two other people were struck, but suffer non-life-threatening injuries. Johnson and his brother fled the area.

Johnson later turned himself in and was read his Miranda rights. He then gave a statement and advised he was in fear for his brother's safety which is why he punched the victim. He said the victim pointed his firearm at him and fired first, at which time he returned fire. He said he and his brother then left the area.
